Dave, Tad and Sezay went to South Africa last week for a Nike research trip.

They had a tour of Cape Town, the Bo-Kaap and District 6 (where the established African community were forcibly removed from their homes to be relocated 30 kms outside the city). They saw the Langa Township where poverty and HIV is rife and spoke to community leaders about special projects to change the socio-economic prospects. They interviewed kids who play sport in the townships, went on a tour through Cape Flats where drugs and gun crime rule. And spent the evening in the more affluent Camps Bay where the middle class live.

They visited a women’s sports facility to talk about the role of sport in their lives, had a retail visit to Canal Walk with multiple interviews with skate kids, sports outlets, etc. Then traveled to J’burg to have dinner with Ashwin Williamse, the Springbok Wing.

In Soweto they met the Kaizer Chiefs (the football team, not the band), visited Nelson Mandela’s house and saw the church where Truth and Reconciliation meetings happened.

It was clearly a great experience. Dave says, "Overall we experienced an incredible positivity and optimism from everyone we met no matter what their circumstances, which was truly humbling."
